Looks like Justin Beiber is the new Ashton Kutcher.
“Punk’d,” the MTV celebrity prank show that Kutcher created and hosted until it became too hard for him to rope in wary famous friends, is coming back.
So Kutcher has turned the show over to the teen heartthrob singer.
The first prank was taped last Friday in LA with singer Taylor Swift as the first unsuspecting victim, according to reports.
The details of the prank were not immediately known.
The show, which debuted in 2003, became one of MTV’s most recognizable shows -- and added the term “punked” to the everyday vocabulary of young people.
It also established Kutcher -- who remains as executive producer of the show -- as a TV powerhouse behind the cameras as well as in front of them, as an actor.
Rumors of a “Punk’d” remake with Bieber as the lead have been swirling since last year.
It is not clear how long Bieber will be hosting the show.
After the first few epiosodes, the series may run with guest or rotating hosts, according to reports.
MTV is anxious to revive the series -- which went off the air in 2007 not for lack of ratings but because it became so difficult for Kutcher to find stars to fool.
MTV knew it could no longer use Kutcher to do the heavy lifting on air any longer.
He had been hired to replace Charlie Sheen in the lead role on “Two and a Half Men,” which he began filming earlier this month.
A number of cable channels are in the process of reviving older hit shows -- including MTV’s sister channel, Nickelodeon, which has been re-airing some of its ’90s-era classics with great ratings success.
