In a tragic sequence of events, a fan lost his life Thursday night at the Texas Rangers vs. Oakland A’s game when he leaned over a guard rail to catch a foul ball thrown by Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton.
The man, who was later identified as Shannon Stone, plummeted 20 feet, head first, onto the hard surface below as other fans and his young son looked on. Although conscious as he was taken out of the stadium by paramedics, he later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

Stone, who had been a firefighter for 18 years, is reported to have said “Please check on my son. My son was up there by himself,” as he was being wheeled out of the stadium. Rescue personnel told him, “Sir, we’ll get your son, we’ll make sure he’s OK.”

Former President George W. Bush was at the game when the accident happened, seated in the front row with Rangers team president Nolan Ryan who later spoke about the incident.
“We had a very tragic accident tonight and one of our fans lost their life reaching over the rail trying to get a ball,” said Ryan after the game. “As an organization, and as our team members and our staff, we’re very heavy-hearted about this, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.”
